Do you have long lasting back pain? Do you spend most of your day trying to relieve the pain in your bank? Have you considered Spinal Decompression? At Oklahoma Physical Therapy we offer spinal therapy.
There are two types of spinal decompression; surgical and nonsurgical.
Nonsurgical decompression is often used to treat the following ailments
- Back or Neck Pain
- Sciatica-pain, tingling or weakness that is felt from the back to the leg
- Herniated or bulging disks
- Injured spinal nerve damage
- Posterior Facet Syndrome-worn spinal joints
At Oklahoma Physical Therapy we administer nonsurgical spinal decompression which helps relieve the back by gentling stretching the spine. This can be done manually with a harness or some therapists use a computer controlled table with a harness.
The decompression takes pressure off the spinal disks creating negative pressure in the disc. Spinal disks are gel like sponges in between the bones located in your spine. As a result of this negative pressure, the disks may retract which takes pressure off of the bones and nerves in the spine which helps promote movement of oxygen, water and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks allowing them to heal.
The patient is fully clothed and is a harness is placed around the pelvis and another around the trunk. Our physical therapists will customize the treatment based on the patient’s specific needs. Each treatment lasts between 30 to 45 minutes and depending on your level of severity you may need 20 to 28 treatments over a period of five to seven weeks.
In order to alleviate the pain and to get your range of motion back to a manageable state, your treatments may also include cold and/or hot therapy, ultrasound or electric stimulation.
We also recommended resting, taking nutritional supplements, drinking plenty of water each day and performing home exercises that will be given to you at each of your spinal therapy visits. These recommendations will help improve mobility and strength.
People who have the following conditions would not be prime candidate for spinal decompression therapy.
- Pregnant
- Tumor
- Advanced osteoporosis
- Metal implants located in the spine
- Fracture
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm
